1983-1985

1983 Hamilton-Madison House opens its first office in another borough, the Korean Clinic in Flushing.

1983 In January, the Chinatown Alcoholism Project begins the first of its kind in the nation. Activities focus on community education, outreach counseling, information, referral and networking.

1983 Two grants from the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies help Hamilton-Madison House to bring together the churches and synagogues in the area to come up with beds for the homeless.

1984 Beginning in the fall, a carpentry training program is provided through Hamilton-Madison House’s Refugee Assistance Program at 50 Madison Street.

1984 A grant from the Greater New York Fund/United Way permits Hamilton-Madison House to institute a remedial tutoring program to help neighboring youths with their school work.

1985 In February, Hamilton-Madison House is selected by the New York Agency for Child Development (ACD) to administer a Head Start pilot project called ALERTA, A Learning Environment Responsive to All.

1985 Hamilton-Madison House is represented on the new Catherine Street Shelter’s community advisory committee.

1985 The Asian American Mental Health Services becomes funded completely by the NYC Department of Mental Health as a permanent program. The Filipino unit, becomes the Southeast Asian Mental Health Clinic.
